This movie by Aparna Sen, which was released earlier this year, is based on a short story by Kunal Basu by the same name.
Aparna Sen, the creator of movies like Mr. and Mrs. Iyer and 15 park Lane, dives in to a different subject this time. The story is set in rural Sunderbans in West Bengal, and describes an era before email and easy long distance telecommunications. The concept itself is interesting - an Indian man becomes a penpal with a Japanese girl, and they marry over mail, and don't see each other for over 15 years...
There are several twists in the movie, and the ending itself is unexpected. Out of all the performers, two stand out - Rahul Bose, Ms. Sen's favorite hero, in a different role as a rural, non-macho, Bengali man, has excelled in this film. The other is Moushumi Chatterjee, who portrays Bose's aunt very convincingly.
The Aparna Sen touches are evident - natural visuals of rural life, the beauty of the Sunderbans and the fury of nature in that part of the world...as well as the well shot kite fight.
All in all, a great, if a tad long, film to watch if you are in the mood for a touching love story...
