SOCIETY$22B Treasure found in South
India...
You may have heard of
the $22B treasure found in a temple in South India - "But here
in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala formerly known as
Trivandrum, many people including the states top elected
official, Hindus and the royal family that once ruled this
part of India and still oversees the temple argue that the
treasure should remain, largely untouched, at the Sri
Padmanabhaswamy temple where it has been housed for
centuries. Their attitude partly reflects a
suspicion that public officials entrusted with large sums of
money will pocket much of it and mismanage the rest. Recent
scandals, including one involving telecom licenses that cost
the government an estimated $40 billion, have reinforced that
cynicism."
CULTUREThe Call Center Sub-culture? Call
Centers, especially in India, have their own sub-culture - if
you haven't read Chetan Bhagat's book (which was made into a
Salman Khan movie called Hello) "One Night @ The Call Center"
the whole description is fascinating. Now, we get another view
from someone who went from the US to spend a summer in an
Indian call center - pretty interesting read... ""In the end, most
of the applicants will fail and return home deeper in debt.
The lucky ones will secure Spartan lodgings and spend their
nights (thanks to time differences) in air-conditioned
white-collar sweatshops. They will earn as much as 20,000
rupees per montharound $2 per hour, or $5,000 per year if
they last that long, which most will not. In a country where
per-capita income is about $900 per year, a BPO salary
qualifies as middle-class. Most call-center agents, however,
will opt to sleep in threadbare hostels, eat like monks, and
send their paychecks home. Taken together, the millions of
calls they make and receive constitute one of the largest
intercultural exchanges in history."
FEATURED CHARITYKids and Cancer
Something
which is bad enough, but when you couple it with the fact that
these kids' parents can't afford their treatment or day care
while they work, it makes it worse. We are partnering with
IACA to do a Charity Gala on Oct 8th in Dallas to raise funds
for the CanKids program - please contact us at desi@TribeDesi.com for more details and
