This is a very sensitive topic for a lot of desis living abroad - how to take care of aging parents, when they are left behind. Siblings or relatives could be a blessing, but are they getting the right love and care they deserve?
As the article states, "A child abroad was once a badge of pride for Indian parents. Money sent home gave them a boost up the economic ladder. But it's hard to be a dutiful child from across oceans. When my father died, I wasn't even able to get home before he was cremated...". The feeling of anxiety and guilt persists - was it really worth it? Am I more responsible for my kids (who will leave me some day too) versus my parents?
In a sign of changing time, the Government stepped in ..."The government recently had to pass a law requiring children to take care of their parents. There were too many cases of seniors abandoned on the streets, according to Matthew Cherian, who runs the advocacy group Help Age India..."
Would love to know your feelings on this one...
