Sweet look at family love - Raspberry Magic

Sweet look at family love - TV/Movies - NewsObserver.com

The review of the movie is good - the challenge of presenting an event or art to the desi community is evident from writer/director Leena Pendharkar's blog:

"This weekend, we opened up Raspberry Magic at the Galaxy Cinemas in Cary (right outside of Raleigh), NC.  Doing a theatrical screening is definitely challenging, because it means that you have to have sustained PR and buzz around the movie for people to go and see it.  We got some good PR through local publications and there was decent buzz, but it was definitely challenging.  We were able to get people at all of the screenings, they were very small crowds, but there were people, and many people who came from reading reviews in the local papers.  Megha and I answered questions after all of the screenings, and it was great to see that people had really interesting questions.  We also spent time at local Indian businesses and the international festival handing out postcards and getting the word out on the movie as much as we could.  We’ll see overall in terms of how it works out financially, but it was nice to show the film in a different place, and really get it out to some new audiences.  The hustle of indie film never stops!"

Concert review: 'Slumdog' composer Rahman's show is like a Bollywood movie come to life

Concert review: 'Slumdog' composer Rahman's show is like a Bollywood movie come to life | Dallas-Fort Worth Entertainment News and Events | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News

There is only one word to describe the AR Rahman Jai Ho Concert last night at the AA center - Classy!

From the moment you walked in and looked at the set - with its sheer curtain, which doubled as a projection screen for various motifs and even the singer Lata Mangeshkar, to the central set of dual staircases, to the elevated bridge in the background - you could see that a lot of thought had been put together in set design.

Add to that the fact that the choreography, music and costumes were excellent - ranging from traditional Indian to Asian fusion -it made for a memorable evening...

The key thing to note here was that there were no big-ticket Bollywood actors or singers in the show (the only exception being the talented Hariharan) - but Rahman gave enough stage time and exposure to most of his musicians and emerging singers - taking a back seat quote a few times - which shows the sign of a good performer.

Overall, a treat to watch, and it has raised the bar for desi shows in America...

'Hiding Divya' was a real challenge for Pooja Kumar

Actress Pooja Kumar at the premiere for the IF...Image via Wikipedia'Hiding Divya' was a real challenge for Pooja Kumar
Pooja Kumar has come a long way. From the early days of Miss India America to a familiar face on ads on NYC buses to her latest movie, Hiding Divya. In fact, at a recent meeting at a large financial planning company, their standard product collateral had a picture of her - maybe showing diversity or the girl next door..
.
The movie sounds very intriguing, but with a new director, its always iffy...as NY TImes states, “Hiding Divya” has moments that feel drawn from life, and the nurturing, smothering Indian community where Divya lives is nicely sketched in. But Ms. Mirza’s storytelling has too many holes: pieces that don’t add up, scenes that leave you with fundamental questions. In the end, you’re none the wiser about mental illness or even about these characters. "
